1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
That latter the better is not true in my opinion pertaining to the bodies.
I have seen the latter 900s(1989 -1993 rust in some places that I have never seen in the older models.
Rumour has it that Saab was going out of business, and was cutting some serious corners.
The last 1994 commerative edition that I checked out had rust in the upper inner wheel wells! I have never seen that! One can even go to an aold 99 or early 900 that has never been restored, and the see the metal solid.
A key area that is overlooked are areas inside the rear edges of the hood. Once you open the hood..peer into the crevice from the edges. This the inner area from where the "Turbo or Saab" emblems are placed on the edges of the hood. In older Saabs, if you look in this same crevice, you can usually see that paint was blown right in, yet on the later Saabs, you will see just primer, and no paint.
Eventually, the rust will start and you will see bubbling right under the emblems on the outside. By the time, you see that, then the rust has taken serious hold. Either you try to repair that which is difficult( as you hve to cut out the metal, or you scrap the hood.
WEll, in terms of rust, 83, 84, to about 86..great.
Here is what to look for:
!985- crumbling wiring harness first year of 16 valve.
1986-1987...stumbling idle...sometims from the computers themselves
and old style timing chain tensioner, and the oil rails in the head that may leak and cause rattling from the lifters not receiving oil.
1988- Water cooled turbo.. Longer turbo life? newer brakes...newer bolt pattern if you like the newer wheels..or deep dish/ aero. Better/ firmer seats...
1989... different computer..
1990 ..not much difference
1991; possibly the first year for the air bag?? if you are into safety yet not sure if the first year was 1990?? and that SRS system.
1991- 1993..beware of rust..check that car thoroughly!!
