That's great the replacement VR fixed the problem. Some of my old Volvo's had the same type of VR in them. Sometimes, when replacing the VR, the light wil flicker occasionally. This is due to the carbon brushes needing to wear to the contour of the armature. I have used a small armature resurfacing stone to clean the mating surface off the contact facing. Sounds like your alt, will be just fine since you caught it in time. Wishing all your other repairs go well.
