1 - the valves may get quieter with a little time? maybe it has a bad lifter or two? or maybe you're just hearing the timing chain slapping the (hardened) top guide pad. For what its worth, this is a 'batch' injection system, where all four fuel injectors fire in unison, and many mistake this for valve noise. with a stethoscope, or a nice long screwdriver as if it were a stethoscope, you should be able to narrow down the source of the noise.
2 - worth pulling the radio to see if a friendly mechanic wrote the code on it.
