The rubber hose that connects the return line to the fuel pump canister in the tank was completely disintegrated and laying at the bottom of the tank. It wasn't just in pieces.. it actually turned into sludge/slime that felt like black tar in your fingers.
The rubber grommet in the tank for the small fuel pump was also deteriorated, along with the grommet for the fuel fill vent line connection at the tank.
Did they even have synthetic rubber back in 1984?:)
The mesh screen had slime/sludge all over it.
