85T-88T ECU cross-compatibility? (Cold idle problem)

My 85 SPG won't stay running when started cold (first thing in the morning or after sitting long enough to have cooled down). The engine catches but dies a second after starting. If I feather the gas pedal I can manage to keep it running until the engine has warmed up, then it's totally fine, although the idle is a bit high (1400 rpm or so -- but the tach sometimes doens't seem to be quite accurate).
I read that the ECUs in 85 were prone to causing idle problems such as this and I also read that an ECU from an 86-88 turbo should work in an 85, but an 85 ECU will not work in a later year car. I wanted to confirm that, since I thought I had also read the opposite.
I know my car probably has a whole host of issues - I did rewire the Hall sensor plug to get rid of that; new NTC sensor/thrmostat/thermoswitch; new plugs/rotor/cap/filter. I think I do need to re-JBweld the brass nipple in the nitake (could that cause such a bad idle problem and then as the brass expands from the heat smooth out the idle?).
Thanks as always for the assistance!
Brian
P.S. I did get a new used AMM, since it helped a somewhat similar problem in another car I used to have, but nope -- same thing still! Guess it's OK to have a spare.
