The working temperature is between 750 and 1450 degrees F. Anywhere in there is fine. The real key is whether the exhaust is hotter AFTER than cat than before it - if it's the same temp or cooler, that means the cat is essentially not working. In an ideal scenario, the exhaust should be about 120 degrees F hotter after the cat has done its thing.
