My ABS pump just failed completely. Relays, accumulator, pressure sensor are all OK, I'm certain. With 12 volts on the pump connector --as should be the case when pressure is near zero, and ignition is switched on-- nothing happens, no hum, no noise, brake fluid light stays on. No hydraulic fluid leaks anywhere. With ABS pump power female connector removed, resistance between the terminal blades on the pump body male connector is infinite, i.e., open circuit, rather than the 2-3 ohms on a good ABS pump. Fortunately, intending to keep this car running forever, I happen to have a spare ABS pump from a parted-out wreck that appears good and runs OK when 12 volt power is applied.
Here's my question: is it possible (as someone claimed on this board some years ago, but without providing details) to replace just the ABS pump/accumulator/sensor sub-assembly without removing the entire master cylinder/reservoir/hydraulics manifold lines? If so, how do I do it?
If not possible, how/where do I gain access to the fasteners (hex nuts?) on the cabin side of the firewall that screw onto the threaded studs on the master cylinder body holding the whole thing in place, and what's involved in unpinning the brake pedal? Is it necessary/desirable to remove the radiator coolant reservoir and/or the alternator to get that puppy out of there? Can the hydraulic lines be unscrewed from the manifold over the wheel well, and left in place on the master cylinder body, where it would seem that the line seating fitting would be more likely to be buggered on backing them off?
