OK, recently installed used, unknown compressor. Last one failed, but behaved the same until it did.
A/C works just fine. Nice and cold, compressor and fans all work nicely.
However, when it cycles off, or if i switch off the A/C via the dash switch, it 'shushes' for a while, with the compressor wheel kind of freewheeling, obviously dragging somewhat.
Pulling the relay does nothing.
There is around 3.3v on the red lead with A/C off, engine running. In fact the voltage appears from the initiation of cranking.
it jumps to around 12v with A/C on (compressor engaged)
It drops down to around 4.5v with A/C turned back off ('shushing' at this point). The voltage creeps down to 3.3v or so, and at some point (or not) the compressor finally disengages.
I have just replaced (with known good) Electro magnet thing on top of compressor, A/C switch in dash, A/C relay in fuse box on fender, and of course the compressor is a different one to the last one that did the same thing (then smoked and died).
I can only deduce that the voltage that exists with the A/C off is not supposed to be there. i don't have another car with fiuncional A/C to compare.
Please help! I don't want to trash another compressor.
If i disconnect the
