ref: my '91 C900, non-turbo, 3 door...
The ABS pump motor failed two weeks ago, all brake boost lost, nursed it home like that from north of NYC, 850 miles to Chicago exurbs! I'm certain that relays and sensors were OK, ohmmeter shows infinite resistance across pump motor power contacts, indicating burnt or blown pump motor.
Expecting just such an eventuality in due course, some months ago I had bought an ABS/MC assembly from a wreck: seller said brakes were A-OK when car was put out of commission.
Bentley manual led me through the exchange today of the complete assembly (entails partly removing dashboard, and completely removing lower dash panels, center console, cabin heater manifold, serious PITA!)
Just put it all back together (including performing manual bleed of the front calipers per Bentley), to discover that while the ABS pump motor runs when the ignition is turned on (I can hear it hum and feel it rotating), there is zero pressure buildup in the system and the brake fluid light stays on, no flickering. No drop at all in fluid reservoir level. Pedal is high and very stiff, as expected from bled lines but no high pressure boost. No hydraulic leakage anywhere.
I spun off the bomb and tried another one known to be good, no improvement. ABS pump motor is definitely spinning, but not pressurizing the system. I removed the bomb, and tried flicking the ignition on for an instant with no bomb screwed in to see if any fluid was moving through the pump. No.
Have not run the pump more than a minute or two at a time, in that amount of time pump motor body/housing doesn't get warm.
I heard that sometimes the pump impeller fails or strips, so that even with the pump motor rotating, there's no pressure gain. Is there a test for that?
Is there anybody out there that knows of another usable '91-93 C900 ABS/MC assembly for sale anywhere? Is there specialty shop somewhere that rebuilds/remanufactures SAAB ABS/MC assemblies. The complete unit was available from SAAB USA for $2,500 (!) until about a year ago, but is no longer listed as a stocked OEM part.
The car is otherwise in great shape, absolutely zero rust (was in central FL most of its life), only 112K total mileage, consistent 32 mpg hwy.
