All good points so far. I'll just add a couple things... Check the condition of your bump stops while you're in there. If the rubber has come loose from the mount, you can re-secure it with some urethane windshield setting compound (clean both surfaces real well). Definitely use a jack under the rear axle. Lower it just enough to work the springs out and in. If you just let it hang, you'll stress the brake line between the axle and undercarriage.
Definitely an in-the-driveway DIY job. Especially if, as you stated, the car has new shocks already installed--no rust to deal with. I wouldn't even screw with the lower shock mounts. IMHO it's an absolute bitch to get the shock back in the lower mount. I'd just undo the top and the the rear arm at the wheel and drop the axle.
