its just a line from the sensor connect at the back to the warning lamp- there are three connections at the back as I recall and perhaps the ground has been reversed with the warning lamp or the wire itself is grounding out somewhere along its path
simple test would be to remove the connection at the sender and see if the light stays lit - then you know you problem lies elsewhere
getting at the lamp means removing the bolster or if you have very long skinny hands reaching in from the speaker hole or removing the dash (not recommended when removing bolster is so much simpler).
another possibility is a fault in the sender itself but if your gauge works then why mess with it.
I actually like the warning light and repaired mine to use it - it means I know I can drive at least another 100 km from the time the warning light goes on steady and still have about 7 or 8 liters to go in the tank - despite the gauge reading empty all the time. That translates to 650-700km per fill up
