UPDATE:
The bolt for the alternator has been tightened up real good. Once that was done, the car still smoked like a non-mechanic with a classic Saab...me. Next on the list, check the spark plugs. They were blacker than black and were coated in soot. Had those replaced. Then, checked the air filter and removed it. That thing must have been moonlighting in vacuum cleaners across the west coast. I think it dates back to 89 when the car was built. So, I junked it.
With that work done, the car holds a charge on the battery. It idles at around 750-800 without the "hunting" and sputtering. There is smooth acceleration and the turbo burble is back to running the show. The best part about all this...there is NO more smoke. None. No matter how hard I gas it, the thing is smoke-free and revs like a it was still 1989 (i think). A beautiful thing.
Next stop...soap, water, turtle wax and a coat of armor all to grease the feet. Thanks for everyone's help. I don't know where I'd be without this site. Probably back on Craigslist...looking for another C900. :)
Til next time...
