so fuel is not likely the issue. The reason I always ask, is because many folks don't mention it (and your original post did not), and some folks are always trying to get by on the cheap stuff.
Have you checked that everything attached to the motor and exhaust is tight? Could be a loose bracket, exhaust clamp, starter bracket, inlet manifold stay, or even something rattling that isn't even attached to the motor...
It's an 88? Do you know if you have the internal or external cam/lifter oiling? The quick way to tell is if the bare cast areas on the inlet side have a crosshatch pattern cast into them. That's the later with the internal oiling. Earlier heads are just the smooth, bare casting. I suppose its possible, if you have the earlier external oiling head, that pressure is bleeding off someplace, and oil isn't getting to the lifters properly.
It's hard to do more than throw out suggestions of places to investigate without being there to hear the noise.
