you need to figure out two things, where it starts and which direction it turns... :)
there should be about 30 degrees on the flywheel of graduation to look for, I usually use a wire brush and clean that part off and mark the zero with some white paint. If you have a timing light that can set degrees of inc or dec that is where you want to mark the flywheel, at Zero. If you have a less expensive timing light that can not be adjusted you want to mark it at the degree of dec if a turbo, if a NA then no mark necessary as the system will do it's own thing.
Try dripping water on it, that often will bring out the marks, turn about 30 degrees at a time, you can lever with a large screwdriver against one of the bolts to help. it's also easier if you take the plugs out...
