9000 has an oil pan Posted by CMyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: RE: C900 /VS/ 9000, Saabnutt, Mon, 24 Aug 2009 15:35:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saabnut,
It's the same engine block but radically different transaxles and the engine is placed 90 degrees differently in the two cars. The 9000 has a "transverse" arrangement and the 900 has an "in line" arrangement. Conventional terminology is that the rear of an engine is where the clutch is fitted to the crankshaft and the front end is where the belts and pulleys are. In Saab 900s (and 99s) the rear of the engine is at the front of the car and the transaxle is designed to fit in place of an oil pan below the engine. That transaxle must split the power at right angles to the left and right axles. In the 9000 the engine is turned 90 degrees so that the rear of the engine is on the left (driver's) side of the engine compartment and the transaxle is bolted onto the rear end of the engine (not the side). There is an oil pan on the bottom of the 9000 engine. Clear as mud, right?
