There is a FAQ on this site that describes the ground bypass method that solves many of these problems. That said, it's a bit of a hack, and our 4 door had a taillight issue re-occur even with the ground fix.
Fundamentally, it is a bit of weak electrical design, and the problem is in the connector: various signals (brake, ground, etc) used by both light assemblies must pass from one pin on the female connector to the male, and back to the opposing pin on the female connector (driver's side). If any contacts get loose or dirty, they can lose contact or burn. Solution for me (this time) was to clean + adjust the spring tension of each contact.
There is a long term solution: any ee knows you minimize connectors for reliability (first things to fail). If mine fails a third time, I'm cutting off the connector + soldering directly. The connectors are just there for the dealer's body shop to do an easy tail light swap.
