First, we haven't yet seen the first true "GM" Saab. THat'll be coming, oh wait, next year as the new 9-5... The NG900/9-3, 9-5, and 9-3 SS/SK owe their design primarily to the Swedes in Trollhattan. The engineering, procurement, and other things you never see were, indeed assisted along in great measure by GM. The new 9-5, coming to a dealership near you for the "2010 model year" more than likely has more GM influence than the others. THough, from what I've seen, perhaps not... (just don't call it the "Koenigsegg 9-5"...) .

If you want something sporty, like the C900, an NG 900/OG 9-3 is the thing. About the same size, and with regular maintenance will run practically forever. You may have to do some work to it, but there's a ton of stuff out there to make them go fast and handle well.

If you want a highway cruiser that also handles the twisties, and has more room, you can't go wrong with a 9-5. Bigger, but not overly so, most of the added room is on the inside. Get a 2002 or later if you can afford it. I'd personally avid the 2006-2009 models, but that's a taste thing, not anything mechanical wrong with them. And they come as a wagon, too...
