Any way you can open the system at it's lowest point will work. The small hose you are referring to is the hose to the turbo coolant line, and yes, that will work to drain it. The proper way is to unscrew the drain on the lower passenger side of the radiator, but that's not always an easy task. It's kind of tight. A deep socket is generally required to open it without marring the thing--it's plastic. A pair of channel-lock pliers will work in a pinch.
As Hans mentioned, it's a good idea to open the block drain up under the exhaust manifold above the inner driver. That drain can collect rust and gunk. It's best to open it while flushing to get all that crap out of the system.
