X2 on the heater hoses. Things are pretty tight in some places under the hood and the hoses can rub during engine vibration and wear thin. I was fixing my clutch MC yesterday and noticed that the hose that runs over the top of the alternator was paper thin where it had been rubbing on the alternator. I ended up replacing it and adding a piece of larger hose around it in the rubbing area to protect it in the future. I then went around every hose under the hood and readjusted them (loosened clamps) so that none were rubbing on anything. The air tube from the turbo to the intercooler is another problem area. It's very thin aluminum. If it rubs on the fan mount or the hose clamp on the radiator hose above it, you can get a hole in it--goodbye boost.
You didn't say weather the car was an auto or 5 speed. If it's an auto, do a complete fluid flush/change. You never know how well it was taken care of by the PO. Search this board to find out how to do a complete transmission fluid change.
