I really didn't want to have to open up the wiring harness after testing/replacing every component in this system and reading posts about the pump , switch , grounds and wires . I read a ton of posts about this problem and for most people it was the contacts at the stalk switch ...but not in my case . I had also sanded down all the wire connectors at the ground point by the radiator . I cut the sleeve of the pump wires back about a foot to where they join with the other wires' sleeves and they looked fine . To uncover any more I would have to cut open the main sleeve that protected a whole bunch of other wires from wear and the heat of the turbo . To go further back I would have to pull the main harness from its resting spot and open that up . This seemed very problematic . After so much testing and work I thought of another test : I would hook up only one pump wire at a time while jumping the other to ground or power depending on which original pump wire I had connected . w/ignition on whle pulling stalk . When I hooked a jumper to the pump's positive pin it didn't run , but when I hooked a jumper to ground it ran . So the ground wire/connection is the problem and I still don't want to pull apart the harness so I will probably hook everything up with a permanent jumper for the ground and still have normal functionality of the washer system . This car (88spg) never has wiring problems and what I can see of the ground wire looks great , also every other component that has wires in the harness with the pump has no problems . Why would this wire go ? Is it because the pump draws a lot of amps and the wire is thin ? If its not the wire and the ground contact is still bad why would all the other components using that ground point still be good ? If someone knows how to identify which wire at the ground point belongs to the pump please let me know . I cleaned them all pretty well , but not perfectly shiny on every part of every connector (they are pretty awkward to reach) . Is this definately the ground point for the pump ? I'm not well versed in wiring diagrams , but the Bently's diagram looks like this is the ground point to me . If someone knows otherwise please let me know . Sorry this post is so long , but this has been a very long and frustrating process for such a minor thing and if some one could give me some further understanding it would make me feel better . But remember , the pump ground is definately the problem and the washer system will definately work as designed with only the modification of a different ground hook up for the pump . Thanks .
