I have found that thermostats good bad after overheating a few times and found the wax(?) inside the thermostat has leaked out. Replace the thermostat, bleed the system by the brass fitting on top of the thermostat housing and see what happens.
If you are still overheating at low speeds, it could be your cooling fan is not working. Check the fan switch at the top left of the radiator. Short the two wires together and see if the cooling fan runs. Replace the fan switch, if it does not kick the fan on. Overheating at highway speeds is another problem. When it starts to get hot at highway speeds, turn the heat on and run the fan on high. If the temperature gauge drops and you can sustain some speed without the temp going too high, then you radiator needs replacement....it can look great from the rear, but the front side fins hiding behind the A/C coil could be really rotted. Kind of any easy replacement job at about 2 hours worth of labor.
