check the VW vanagon listservs on the repair - similar procedure for SAABs which I have done in two ways
there is a nylon gear which tends to break or get dislodged when the driver resets the trip odometer while moving forward - there is a fix for this involving repairing the gear and the related mechanism
a second possibility is removing the odometer from another cluster though I suspect this is not difficult it might be illegal
one other possibility especially with speedo going "nuts" is the the cable needs to be thoroughly lubed and is not fully inserted
mine used to wag a lot in cold temps over 60 mph until I put a fair amount of very light oil down the line - others say use graphite lube
