Anytime you can change clutch behavior by pumping the pedal you have a hydraulic problem and not an actual "clutch" problem (of course you could have both). A hydraulic problem can include either the master, the slave or the line between the two. The master and line can both leak externally or be internally damaged and cause problems, the slave will leak externally when bad so inspect closely for leaks. If you aren't losing brake fluid and find no leaks then you have an internally damaged master cylinder. The inner lining of the hose deteriorates over time and clogs up making the fluid flow uneven and requiring extra force to disengage the clutch. Of course air in the circuit will cause problems too and bleeding is a bit tricky. There's lots of opinions on this board about that. I always bleed them with a little pressure from slave to master, it's never failed me. Don't forget to attach the spring that lifts the clutch pedal either. That helps the master cylinder return and refill. Good luck
