nontypical tranny noise Posted by camm [Email] (#191) [Profile/Gallery] (more from camm) on Sat, 26 Sep 2009 21:05:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 1983 900T has been making louder tranny noises recently. When accelerating normally through the gears - in 1, particularly 2, less so in 3 and to a much lesser degree 4, I'm getting a pronounced mid-pitch gear whine noise that changes in pitch with speed. These noises were there in the prior 3 years that I've driven the car (albeit sparingly) but have become a little more noticeable.
I'm familiar with the classic pinion bearing failure noises (the high ringing on accel and decel around 45, starting in 5) and this is not it. FWIW, the tranny make the typical slight whirring when idling in N with the clutch out, nothing particularly unusual there.
Any ideas? A bad bearing? Worn shaft? A dying pinion, but with a different failure sound?
I'm looking for a used gearbox to rebuild over the winter, but if this an imminent fail indicator, I'd hate to mangle this one unnecessarily in the meantime.
