No earlier distributors will fit without wiring mods. The crank-sensor cars have the sensor at one end of the motor, and the dist-sensor cars have it at the other end. Mechanically, the distributors should swap with no fuss.

I read the original thread. What is the mechanic measuring the pulse with? And how? Most standard meters, if they don't do peak hold, or if they are not a scope type, won't capture the peak voltage of the pulse, but rather something less. Though, if you are manually "cranking" the motor around, you should be able to see the pulses on just about any meter. But cranking on the starter, not usually.

Your original post only mentions the CPS. What troubleshooting have you done on the other components? The ECU, rotor, cap, wires (are the wires on in the right position and order?). Have you checked for spark at the plugs? Are you sure it's the ignition system? Maybe fuel isn't getting where its supposed to, or in the quantities its supposed to.

Don't get hung up on one component until you've positively eliminated all the rest. If you swapped in two new CPS with no change in the symptoms, the solution may (probably!) lie someplace else.
