My lady and my Saab... (sigh) Posted by gfreshski1 [Email] (#1116) [Profile/Gallery] (more from gfreshski1) on Sat, 10 Oct 2009 18:29:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I let my girlfriend borrow my '92 900 T today. After trying to explain the things she had to do in particular with this car (like the reverse lockout, getting into gear without forcing it etc) I wrote out a mini instruction guide for her. She felt the car had too many quirks. (I know my love)
Then to be safe, we went out for a 15 minute drive so I could coach her on the fine points. All went well. After an hour of seeing her drive off around the corner (cue the soft cello music), I get a phone call from her; "I turned the car off but it sounds like its still running!" Me: "That's okay my Turtle Dove, its the cooling fans, it'll turn off automatically." I didn't have time in the 15 minute tutelage session to tell her about letting the engine cool and the fans turn off before engine shutdown, I didn't think she had the patience.
A half hour later, I get another call; "Hey, the car won't start." Me: "You still parked right?" "No, I stalled at a stop sign and it won't restart, so I put it in reverse and..." Me; "Sweet, it doesn't need to be in reverse. Push in the clutch and try to restart." "Nothing, it won't go." Me;"Push the clutch in, keep it in, turn the key all the way off then all the way back to start."
"No, nothing." Me; "Well, I just replaced the ignition lock six months ago, did you break it?" "I don't think so."
So, I get on the phone to Walter Wong (Bless this man), and he tells me that he can get to her location in 25 minutes (she was stuck in West LA not too far from Right Solution). I give him her location then call her back.
"Hello?" Me;"Sweetie?" "No, it's her friend. Your car is fine, a stranger helped us." Me;"What was it?" "I don't know but he tried it and it started right up." Me; "Sounds like she did not turn it all the way to the off position before trying to restart."
I didn't have time to tell her that if you have an unsuccessful start, that in order to reengage the starter, you have to turn the key all the way back to the off position. I didn't think she had the patience.
Anyway, I am just waiting nervously for my 900 (Virva) and my lady to both safely return to my home. Anybody have an experience with their significant other and their lack of understanding of their Saab and did you do anything successful to turn the tide?
