I know that on earlier models the buzzer was wired into the door/interior light system so that if you simply took the buzzer out of the equation the interior lights would not work. I solved this by removing the buzzer and then as I recall running a ground line to the ignition console connectors at the switch "as if" the buzzer was on all the time - details can be found on this site.
However I was not aware the rear defroster was connected as well into this system. Is it not more likely that something got dislodged/ pulled out/ removed when and if you did something behind the dash? I'd pull the switch first and see if its functional.
