primary gear differences question

I have an 88 spg with a rebuilt trans from another car . #GM45610 - apparently from an 88 na car judging by the # . If I'm correct it has #6 primary gears . First gear is so rediculously short that if I accelerate hard its like I have to shift about one second after takeoff in first . This makes it pretty tough to get a good shift into second , nevermind the general drivability issues this creates . I really want to get good shifts in order to preserve the synchroes and rest of the trans . I don't do excessively hard launches or wheelspins , just reasonably quick takeoffs at times like when pulling out into heavy traffic . So how much more distance or speed would I get if I switched to #8 primaries ? I'm hoping for specific real world answers if anyone kmows . Thanks in advance .
