Look at the panel where the relay plugs in.
You will probably find that there is heat damage to the plastic at one or more of the contact 'plug-ins'. My theory is that with age the female wiring plug looses tension and the contact of the male/female plug together contact allows some arcing and heat build up.
I forget which contqct it was on my car,but the plastic was damaged to the point that I couldn't resecure a new metal female 'end' in the plastic.
I drilled a hole just large enough for the metal wire end to pass thru.
Now when you pull the relay there is one wire still connected that must be disconnected by hand.
I checked several other cars at the time and found two with very early signs of heat damage at the same contact. I was able to pop the contact down and out of the plastic - replaced the wire end with the proper type that then snapped back into the plastic panel and provided a good tight connection again. I also figured out that with a proper size male 'spade' wire end connector I could check all the contacts in the relay panel to see if any others were not tight.
