8v distributor bearing issue?

Ok, so I replaced the leaky distributor o-ring on my 88 8v n/a. While I had the distributor out, I cleaned it thoroughly using carb cleaner (it was a mess!). After cleaning, I was spinning the rotor and noticed that while it seems to spin freely, it would "bind" up from time to time. I would then have to rotate it the opposite way to "free it up". Is this a sign of the bearings going bad in it? I put everything back together and the car does run, but I'm worried about it binding again while trying to start the car. I have to believe that the distributor would rip apart if that happened. Suggestions?
Thanks!
