Fixing it in the car is not an option. You need to remove the front case of the transmission to even see the spring. At that point, the transmission should really be overhauled.
BUT, all is not dark and gloomy. You can install a shifter from an 85 or earlier car. It has the EXTERNAL centering device. It will work perfectly, and its only a couple hours work.
You may also want to change the transmissions oil and possibly remove the side covers to see if you can fish out the broken spring piece. Its about 3/4" long. I doubt it would get into anything, but I wouldn't want it floating around. It may be on the magnet of the drain plug.
