Check the small spade terminal on the starter to be sure it is making good contact to kick in the solenoid. Disconnect and reconnect multiple times to get a good connection. A bad battery cable can also cause you grief. Use some jumper cables in parallel to the battery cables and see if that helps. If the solenoid is lazy, or non-functioning, apply battery (+) directly to the big terminal adjacent to the where the battery (+) cable is attached. This will apply power directly to the starter motor.
