OK, just installed a used, largely unknown engine/box in the 88SPG. The PO was a breaker, who had bought the car cheap as it was popping out of 2nd under power. He pulled the shifter, and discovered it to be badly worn, so he tried a good one. Said it ran like a champ around the block (he is a trustworthy person). However, i don't think he ever went into 5th. The trans had no oil in it...

Long story short, everything seems to work 100%, except it does not go into 5th properly. It starts to go in, but does not snick in the full amount, and if i let go of the shifter, it just falls back out of gear. The car is still up on stands right now, will be road testing in the morning. The coupler, engine mounts, and shifter are all 100%, and the shifting in the previous trans was fine. I have obviously put oil in it, and it does not sound bad, although, like i said, i havn't road tested yet...

Any thoughts on this condition, and possible fixes, would be appreciated.
