Erratic warm idle is driving me crazy

1988 900S, 16V, 5spd, almost 175K miles.
I pulled the AIC valve and cleaned it and also cleaned the throttle body this weekend. I had good steady idling-but a little on the high side-for a couple of trips and then the erratic revving up to 1500-1800 rmps followed by a drop to around 1100-1200 rpms started again with the check engine light. I pulled the AIC valve again and sprayed it with WD-40 and also cleaned the electrical contacts with no improvement. When I pull the connecter off of the AIC, I can hear the unit working and the idle change.
In my search for vacuum leaks, I noticed that on the bottom of the vacuum regulator behind the driver's side headlight, mounted on the chassis over the top of the charcoal cannister, one of the nipples on the bottom of it does not have a hose on it but I don't see a hose from anywhere that led to it. The 2 outlets on the bottom of this device both have a straight nipple and one off to the side for a total of 4 hose connections. There are 2 short hoses that loop around this device that attach to 2 of them. Am I onto something here? I see a hose that runs along the chassis and into the firewall and an open fitting with no hose on it but I have no idea what hose would run to it and I can't find a picture in the Bentley manual to follow it. Any help and input would be greatly appreciated.
