Most pre-ignition problems (pinging) are usually caused by a too-lean Air Fuel mixture. If combustion is insufficient (ie: weak spark) much unburned fuel will make it to the O2 sensor and cause the fuel system to lean the mixture out with less fuel. Under a heavy load (or hard acceleration) the fuel demand is high, but the LH computer will be trying to trim fuel usage back.
As Simon says (no pun intended) you may want to tune-up your ignition system and see if that clears things up a bit. If you have been driving the engine with this condition long you may want to replace the oxygen sensor too, as it may be contaminated with carbon build up. Also, may take a few long hot drives to burn up any carbon may have built up on the pistons.
