Any dash warning lights? Can you hear the ABS pump turn on when you turn the key to the "on" position then turn off 20-30 seconds later?
There are two chambers in the fluid reservoir -- one for the brakes, one for the clutch. Make sure both have enough fluid.

Sounds like hydraulics.

This is odd. You ought to be able to get the shifter into neural. Set the parking brake, have someone rock the car and see if you can get it into neutral.

I've never had trouble with pressure bleeding. Problem is you need a pressure bleeder. I'd let you use mine if you were in the area. Gravity bleeding might work as well.
Is your brake pedal firm? Any chance one of the caliper bleeders was left open?
