The best option is just finding a new one. That is what I did. I mean, they aren't too expensive, and some dealers and independents stocked a few of them. Most are happy to sell you one. Just because it is NLA from SAAB doesn't mean there aren't any around.
I spoke with Nat at erikkson industries. He told me he just bangs out used ones, and reuses them. I'm sure this would work, but I'd prefer not to do this. In my opinion, once they are crushed, they are done. Nat also sells a new countershaft for $70.
My friend's father restores brass age cars. He had the idea of reusing an old one, but instead of banging it out, he would add a shim, and crush it further. I don't know about this idea either.
If you plan to rebuild a 900 transmission, I would do it soon. Lots of stuff is getting hard to find. The stack height shims are still available, and pretty cheap ($3 each), but I suspect they'll be gone soon.
I suspect the bearings, seals, and gaskets will always be available. The old gearboxes (up until 89) will always need a countershaft, crush sleeve, stack height shims and a pinion nut. Without that stuff you can't rebuild it. You'll still most likely need to have another box for parts to scavenge good shift forks and syncros and reverse gears. You don't always need shift forks and reverse gears, but sometimes you do, and that could be a show stopper. These will get much harder to put together as time goes on and good parts get scarcer. Also keep in mind that parts from all of the gearboxes don't interchange, and the parts don't have part numbers stamped on them. If you take a gearbox apart, keep the parts together so you don't mix them up with a different (and possibly incompatible) gearbox I rebuilt a box this fall just to put on the shelf. I may do one more and then sell all of my transmission tools.
