Lee! What your mechanic said doesn't sound correct. The pulleys that turn all 4 belts have 3 machined, solid, pulleys and one, A/C, bolted on pulley. I have never hear of the woodruff key that locks the whole pulley assembaly onto the crankshaft go bad. I would bet that the metal shavings are from the pulley hitting the oil pump housing and shaving it down. Don't want to drive the Saab with this going on. A way to test this is with a magnet. If the shavings are from the oil pump housing, the magnet will not attract them since they are aluminum (non-ferrous. Did the battery/alternator repair fix any pervious problem? If the pervious repair didn't fix your problem with charging/starting, then what you needed was to have the harmonic balancer pulley replaced. When the rubber that bonds the pulleys to the crank shaft hub fails, the pulleys can't drive the belts. Seems like one of the alternator belts wasn't on the pulley since the three of the four pulley are a solid machined unit. It's "impossible" for 1/2 of the pulley not to turn. Something doesn't sound right about your resent repair job. Not every mechanic understands these Saabs workings!
