Short version:
Now looking for a power steering fluid reservoir, please advise on any leads on where I can find one. I have a few e-mails out. I live in Arizona
so junkyards are not much of an option.
Long Version (things I've learned):
Attempted re-build of PS Pump.
Lesson 1: Draining the fluid, not sure what I learned but it was a mess. I inserted a 1/4" tube in the high pressure side and started the car....It shot the tube out and sprayed fluid all over the place. Next time I will spend more time restraining the line (at least) it may even be worth trying to mate a tube with the right thread. BTW: I will also use the turkey baster method I read about here.
Lesson 2: Bentley's lies (or uses and earlier model for the manual). My car (91) has some HVAC thing at the corner of the firewall. No way to rotate PS pump with bracket out of engine bay. On the upside it wasn't as hard to remove the bracket from the pump in the bay as I feared.
Lesson 3: The autozone GM PS Pully puller (loaner) works!
Lesson 4: Use the heavy duty snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring holding the bearing (I have a set of bent up of light duty ones)
Lesson 5: Never figured this out, the back end of the pump is held in with a lock wire wedged behind the cover plate. I gave up on the full re-build and settled for just replacing the bearing (which I think addresses the actual problem).
Lesson 6: Need to find a better way to anchor my arbor press in my workshop. Damn near flipped the whole work bench trying to press the bearing on the spindle.
Lesson 7: (I have a single lane driveway). If there is any risk in a job going south (which is always for me) don't park it behind your only other SAAB. I am now unable to drive a SAAB and its wearing on my mental well being.
Lesson 8: Go over the entire system you are working on before deciding you are ready to start. I was all set to re-build the power steering pump, only to find that another leak was coming from the reservoir.
In general, let me know if you are going to do a job, If Ive done it I will tell you how and just to the opposite (Castanza rule) and you should be fine.
