yes. when bidding on a potentially competitive item, sniping is imho the only way to avoid a bidding war that artificially drives up the price above average market values. In my experience, hot items are never won by early bidders... they usually are just being optimistic looking for deals that aren't there + couldn't afford to win anyway. The winning bid is almost always a new name that wasn't on the list before.
Always bid within the last second or 2 (don't need a program) at the highest amount you are willing to pay. That way nobody can see your bid + change their mind. If it goes for more, you weren't willing to pay that much + so don't feel bad!
Some might say it's unfair. Imho, while not necessarily as good for sellers (who might want a bidding war), that is the fairest system for buyers to use...
but the issue of a seller secretly bidding on their own item is not kosher, so if you can verify it, report it...
