Hello all,

Once again, forgive my n00bish questions--I am learning on the go. And I do mean on the go--I drive 40 miles each way to work in my 1990 SPG...

So this past weekend my Dad and I successfully installed a new (refurbished) alternator, which appears to be working fine... However, upon getting everything back in its place, I now have a new issue--the car is idling very high (~1500rpm). I assumed this had to do with the fact that the battery was disconnected for about a week and so the internal computer info would have been reset...but I've driven a couple hundred miles now and the car is still idling high. It seems to be that if I start it without giving any gas, it idles about right (~900rpm) but then once I give it any gas, it goes to a higher idle. Today while driving to work I noticed that when I would stop at a light, the idle would be about 1500, then it might drop to ~1400 for a second and then slowly climb back to about 1600, then drop and repeat. However, this was very inconsistent, because at other times, it just sat there solidly around 1600.

I thought maybe a vacuum leak? Because when we first got the alternator back in, it seemed to me there was a slight hissing sound coming from the vicinity of the alternator that I'd never noticed before.

I don't know enough to know which hoses etc are vacuum lines to even check. When taking out the alternator, I disconnected two fat hoses which seem to be for the heater control (they attach to the firewall and spilled coolant). Also a very skinny (thinner than a pencil) hose that passed near the alternator came disconnected from a T intersection sort of between the alternator and where the throttle cable comes out and attaches to the lever. I reconnected those three hoses--is there a likely culprit for a hose which I may've accidently knocked loose which is now leaking air, or something like that? One near the alternator?

Please forgive my ignorance....and thank you for the many helpful responses! This site and you guys are a car-saver!

With much gratitude,
Sky
