Todd,
That's kind of strange behavior, not a typical fault description. It kind of suggests that the 1-2 shift valve is jammed but could be a problem with the governor valve or the shift control cable. The 1-2 valve and governor can each be disassembled and checked. The governor is accessed through the rear pan and the 1-2 valve is in the throttle body which would have to be removed. If the cable is improperly adjusted then it should be dealt with promptly as that will soon cause the planetary gearset to break. Look closely to determine whether any of the tubes have come loose. Normally the pans prevent that but if a pan gets bent the tubes can escape from their ports and a loose tube could cause valve body mis-behavior. The fact that you have second gear when in "2" means that the flex band is working OK so this is not just a "band apply" problem and I would advise against making any band adjustments. The flex band is (seemingly) failing to apply when in "D" but it is due to lack of apply pressure from the 1-2 shift valve not a mechanical fault. The servo must be OK or (again) you'd have no second in "2". Governor valves due sometimes get jammed on these units and so do valve body components especially with high mileage. The shift control cable won't normally just go out of adjustment on it's own (has it been tampered with lately) but it's a serious problem if it is out of whack and will cause the unit confusion regarding second and third which might present as skipping from first to third. That condition is only tolerated briefly and then the planetary gears spit out their teeth so check for proper cable adjustment in any event. Unless you have the SAAB section 4 (automatic) manual and a DIY bent then you should have a reliable independent SAAB shop take care of this. Dropping the pans and working from below is a very unpleasant task without a lift so yet another reason to get an indy on the job. Good luck.
