As the others noted, they bronze/gold paint was only applied sparingly, it did not cover the entire coil. SPG springs do have thicker wire, and fewer coils, IIRC.
Also remember that not all SPGs got the lowered suspension. The 85s & 86s ride on standard springs, with gas shocks. It wasn't until 87 that the lowered suspension was put on.
