First make sure that your gasket is not leaking because you have a broken manifold stud. I had one break and not fall out until I touched it. Then it just came out in my hand. I replaced the stud and the leak was fixed.
I don't see why you couldn't leave the turbo in the car. You may have difficulty with the bolts holding the turbo to the manifold. They rust up and it's not easy to get a wrench on them. If you get them off (in one piece or not) you can replace them with stainless steel bolts. That's what I have on all my cars. It makes it much easier to get it apart in the future. Just be sure to re-torque them after a couple heat/cool cycles. I personally hate to re-seat the oil return line and drain the coolant so you can disconnect the turbo coolant line. Anything I can do to avoid that makes it easier for me.
Disconnect the downpipe from the turbo and unbolt the hanger from the transmission (leave it connected to the pipe) and just drop the downpipe out of the way and you should have plenty of room to work.
Be sure to get a new gasket for the turbo/manifold joint if you're going to do it that way.
