CAR DIES DRIVING IN SNOW CONDITIONS

My 1993 900S twice this winter has sputtered, coughed, won't accelerate and then dies completely in the last 2 heavier snow conditions (wet, slush roads)when I was out driving.
Then an hour later starts right up and no issues. Replaced fuel pump still happened after the 1st time. No snow last few weeks, car runs fine. Doesn't happen in rain. Just started this winter, ran fine in snow in past winters.
Someone suggested rigging up a splash guard under the crank sensor as they thought snow was affecting conditions, but that a new sensor might not change the issue. Other ideas? Thanks for any ideas- Bruce
