So, it turns out my distributor was extremely messed up inside... having never opened a distributor before in my life, it's hard to know the correct terminology...
I went to inspect the cap and rotor, and found that both looked fairly good, but there were some buildups on the points on the cap, so I decided to replace both as they're cheap...
When I pulled the rotor off, a screw and washer came with it, which didn't seem normal... curiously, the hall effect spinning assembly thing was able to pull in and out of the body of the distributor and spin independently of the camshaft, which seemed wrong... I put things back together and started the car, and it still ran like crap.
I was playing with the hall effect connector on the outside of the distributor, and generally banging around to see if something would come lose..... well, it did and all of a sudden I heard a scraping noise from inside the distributor.
I decided to remove it and take it apart, and I found the springs that are supposed to go between the spindle assembly and hall effect assembly were messed up, one was attached completely incorrectly and the other was now rattling around unattached to anything...
I completely disassembled it, looked at pictures of distributors trying to figure out how they are supposed to go together, and got it back together correctly.
Upon re-installation, even though I had just eyeballed the position for the timing, the car engine in 2 cranks, something it's never done... got out the timing light and set to 16 BTDC, and the car is running like a top!
Haven't let it get dead cold yet and tried restarting, but it seems fairly likely that this was it...
I had always had an occasional misfire at idle which is now gone... not to mention the engine is much quieter and the idle is dead stable!
After getting that sorted, I was able to install the Red Box, 3bar FPR, and '93 CE vacuum advance which came in the mail this morning... car is now running like a top, and goes like a stabbed rat.
Thanks for getting me onto the path of ignition, gents!
Cheers,
