check the og9-3 board (this is not really the right place to ask) but to summarize, 2000-2002 are prone to sludging, 1999 not. On the flip side, red DI cassettes are more expensive. 1999 is the last 900/9-3 year before they switched over to black. I expect the red cassettes will also be obsoleted sooner... Newer (2004+) black DIs seem to be less prone to fail + less likely to leave you stranded (many with older DIs carry a spare in the trunk). iirc, SE also gets the more reliable TD04 turbo (though the garrett seems to be less problematic in 9-3 than in 9-5) and also the more reliable electric hvac system (apparently the manual ones fail more in 9-3 as astounding as that sounds). watch for missing pixels on the SID...
I think most people who own the 9-3 like them a lot. We definitely looked at them (ended up with a second c900). Big differences vs c900: c900 handling is better, but 9-3 is faster. All 9-3's have turbos. 9-3's might be a bit more reliable (if well fed), but c900s are more durable. 9-3's look smaller, but actually are a touch larger. Parts are often more expensive for the newer cars than the c900 + less "repairable". So depends what you like. There are definitely bargains on 9-3's and 9-5's these days...
