gear oil.. I suggest something in the 75/80 weight rating. NO, there is NO issue with using GL4 as the GL oil weight ratings system is Entirely different than that IF that does not work then your input shaft bearings (the Noise) are simply too far gone for an oil 'fix.. REPLACE them.
Don't use STP/Lucas as it will turn to molasses in the cool (not just cold) and can shift bearings out of line as result.
