Personally I wouldn't bet on the rebuilt being better, lol. If the used one has had fluid in it, theres a good chance its just fine.
If you can jack it up, have someone operate the pedal when you spin the wheel, even without power assist, you should be able to lock the wheel up, and release it again. Thats about as far as you can go without taking it out. Basically you want to see that the piston moves, and doesn't stick on once pressure is released.
You can check this further once the piston is removed: that is, you can presume the piston is partially extended (pads on the parts car aren't new). So you should be able to pull the caliper off the hub, and press the piston back into the caliper pretty easily. Maybe not by hand, but without excessive force. If the previous test worked, this should go without a hitch.
