1989, 900s 2.0L no turbo. Car had AC, but that's been removed.

When the fan comes on, only the main fan comes on. When I jump the sensor, both fans run. While that's normal behaviour for a 2.1L, I thought both fans were supposed to run all the time on a 1989 2.0L (according to Townsend + the SAAB TSB)? no?

This car seems to have an intermittent overheating or temperature overshoot problem where the fans don't always come on or not as soon as they should. Part of that is the 82 degree thermostat + unknown sensor. I'll replace the sensor with the 82 degree vw part, but I would have thought even with the overshoot problem, the fan should at least turn on at the end of a trip (and that the behaviour should be similar on each drive)... it seems erratic (last night after a long drive including highway, no fans at all)... all coolant hoses warm up so it must be flowing... might replace the thermostat anyway... it's been at least 5 years...
